Transforming European Building Efficiency

Airten V3 | Void

With the European Union setting the stage for a greener future, the spotlight is on the ambitious goals to curb energy consumption in buildings across Europe. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive recast (EPBD recast, 2010) has made it clear that enhancement of building efficiency is not just about erecting new zero-energy structures, but also about significantly upgrading existing ones - a noticeable shift towards nearly zero-energy buildings.

Introduction to iNSPiRe

The iNSPiRe project, standing at the intersection of innovation and sustainability, sets forth a comprehensive plan. Harmonizing the efforts of 24 partners through a four-year, EC-funded project encapsulating nine work packages, iNSPiRe takes on the herculean task of lowering high-energy consumption in residential and tertiary buildings. These collaborative efforts include a kaleidoscope of participants spanning research entities, industry experts, SMEs, and non-profits.

Objectives and Renovation Strategies

The underpinning goal of iNSPiRe is the development of systemic renovation packages tailored to a diverse array of climates while prioritizing user comfort. What sets it apart is its steadfast aim to trim down primary energy consumption of buildings to less than 50 kWh/m2/year. This ambition begins with an exhaustive analysis of the European building stock to earmark seven representative building types, setting the stage for high-replication retrofit approaches.

The project bravely ventures into the territory of multifunctional renovation kits, incorporating cutting-edge envelope technologies, renewable energy system integrations (RES), and sophisticated energy distribution systems. There's palpable excitement surrounding the bespoke designs of façade and roof kits, complete with ingenious energy storage solutions and state-of-the-art heating and ventilation devices.

Practical Implementation and Case Studies

The practicality of iNSPiRe's vision is put to the test through real-life implementations of its developed technologies in select case studies located in Germany, Spain, and Italy - encompassing both residential and office buildings. The project's manifesto, as articulated by its coordinator Roberto Fedrizzi, extends beyond mere conceptualization, ensuring the delivery of market-ready processes and products.

Simulation and Database Development

To champion the most efficient and cost-effective renovation practices, iNSPiRe is also constructing a database. This resource will be the guiding light for professionals in the engineering, architectural realms, and beyond, providing simulation data as a benchmark for the deep renovation of buildings. It promises a beacon of insight for those at the initial stages of a construction overhaul, who seek an amalgamation of energy-conscious and financially sound decisions.
